New port-based hub to deliver parcels by electric boat

06 Sep 2019

A new ‘cityhub’ in the Amsterdam port area will help to dramatically reduce the number of vans and heavy goods vehicles in the city. Instead, parcels, hotel and catering supplies and construction site deliveries will enter Amsterdam by electric boat.

That is the idea behind the Amsterdam Logistic Cityhub (ALC), a new port-based enterprise for which the plans were officially unveiled on Monday. Costing in the region of 160 million euros, the ALC is planned to be operational by 2021.

The hub actually consists of two distribution centres on top of one another, as ALC director Wouter Moll explains, with a total of 125,000 square metres of warehousing space. The project is financed by wealthy investors Robert van der Wallen and Wim Beelen whose waste processing business Beelen is right next to the ALC in the Port of Amsterdam.
